Abstract
The obesity epidemic has been a major concern in this country for many years. The rate of children who are classified as obese has risen tremendously and many people have turned to the school systems as a way to combat this blossoming epidemic. Due to the nature of physical education classes it seems to be an appropriate setting to facilitate these needs but traditionally how has the physical education setting served those students who are considered overweight. Majority of the research has suggested that overweight children feel ostracized and have negative attitudes towards physical education. This article examines attitudes towards physical education as taken from the perspective of the overweight student. The research highlights several factors that influence the overweight student’s dislike for physical education, including inappropriate teaching practices and low self-efficacy. By considering and analyzing the information provided in the literature suggestions one made about how to improve the attitudes of overweight children towards physical education.
